ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team rode the strong arms of Matt Bush and Bryan Oland to a pair of wins over Hawaii Pacific on Thursday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves tied the school record for consecutive wins in game one, a 5-3 victory, before breaking it with their 14th consecutive win in the nightcap, 15-1. The win pushes SSU's record to 27-5 on the year. HPU drops to 17-14.
The Seawolves have not lost a game since March 10th and are winners of 22 of their last 24. In addition, Sonoma State improved their record at Seawolf Diamond to an impressive 20-1 this season.
Matt Bush (W, 6-1) went six innings, striking out four and allowing just two unearned runs in the opener. Tied at one, Sonoma State got the game-winning run in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run double by Robert Walden. Paige Dumont pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his eight save of the season and lower his earned run average to 0.39.
Tyrese McDaniel and Ian Bridges each had two hits for the Seawolves. B.J. Collom scored twice and Walden was the team leader with two RBIs. Danny Lee went 3-for-4 to lead HPU. Spencer Omalza pithced well, but was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in six innings.
Sonoma State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two, giving starter Bryan Oland (W, 6-0) more than offense than he would need. Oland went five innings, allowing seven hits and one run while striking out five.
SSU got contributions from the starting lineup as well as the bench. Dave Herman, the second batter of the game, hit a two-run homer to lead a four-homer attack from SSU. Eli Rimes, Travis Babin, and Vance Otake also had home runs. Otake's home run came with the bases loaded as the Hawaii native finished with a team-high five runs batted in.
David Adler scored three times and SSU got two runs from Leo Avila, Babin, and Jason Buhagiar. Arthur McHenry and John Bonifacini tossed the final two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Johnny Gentry, Spencer Omalza, and Mark Veneri all had two hits apiece for HPU.
The Seawolves and Sea Warriors will conclude this five game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at noon.
