Seawolf Upset Bid Falls Just Short Against UCSD

Laura Robertson earned a win at No. 1 doubles on Friday
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State women's tennis team came up just short in their upset bid against No. 16 UC San Diego as the Seawolves fell 5-4.  SSU was able to take two of the three doubles matches, but the Tritons stormed back for the win with four of six singles competitions.  The loss drops the Seawolves to 0-7, 0-3 CCAA.

It looked like an upset might have been in the air early on Friday as SSU took a 2-0 lead with a pair of wins in doubles.  Stephanie Luk and Laura Robertson defeated the UCSD No. 1 doubles team 8-4 while Erin Kramer and Raquel Gottfried did the same at No. 2.  Unfortunately, the Tritons rallied for an 8-4 win at No. 3.

The Seawolves took two singles matches, at No. 4 and No. 6.  Amy Belsher defeated Tessa Tran 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 4 while Alexis Webb persevered for a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 victory at six.

It would have been the first ever win for SSU over the Tritons as they were winless in their previous 12 meetings.  UCSD has won three consecutive CCAA championships and is consistently ranked among the nation's top teams.

SSU will look for win number one next Friday when they play Western New Mexico in Pomona.
