ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team beat Cal State East Bay 12-4 on Tuesday afternoon in Rohnert Park to extend their school record winning streak to 17 games. The non-conference win pushes ninth-ranked SSU's record to 30-5 on the season. The Pioneers drop to 14-11.
On Tuesday, head coach
John Goelz used 29 total players, including ten different pitchers. The result, however, was the same as SSU improved to 23-1 on the season at Seawolf Diamond. Sonoma State also reached the 30-win plateau for the 13th time since 1987.
The Seawolves struck for five first inning runs off Pioneer starter Steven Roll. SSU collected five singles and two walks as they batted around in the first. Though CSU East Bay would pull to within two at 5-3, the Seawolves were able to open things up with runs in the fourth and fifth before Vance Otake hit a three-run home run to put SSU up 10-3 in the sixth.
B.J. Collom continued to swing the hot stick, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Konrad Thieme and Leo Avila each had two hits as well.
Matt Garnett got the start for the Seawolves, tossing 2.1 innings and yielding four hits and two runs. Glen Wood, one of the ten pitchers the Seawolves would use, got the win after his scoreless third inning set the tone for the rest of the game.
The Seawolves will continue CCAA play on Friday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay in the first of two doubleheaders.
