ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Two very different games....one common result.. It doesn't seem to matter what type of game the Sonoma State baseball team is playing in these days, they'll find a way to win it. The Seawolves did just that on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader from Cal State Monterey Bay to extend their school record winning streak to 19 games in a row. SSU won game one 15-3 before pulling out a 5-4 win in the nightcap to improve to 32-5, 16-2 CCAA. The Otters drop to 12-26, 7-19 CCAA.
Sonoma State, ranked 9th in both the ABCA and NCBWA national polls, improves to 25-1 at home this season. They've also won 27 of their last 29 games.
Game one was a rout from the get-go. SSU used a five-run second inning to blow things open and they didn't look back. Another run in the third inning set up another five-run frame to give SSU an 11-0 lead after four. Every Seawolf starter had at least one hit by the fourth inning. The Seawolves led 15-0 in the ninth before the Otters squeezed out three runs.
SSU starter Bryan Oland was spectacular, improving to 7-0 on the year with an eight-inning, five-hit performance. Oland didn't allow a run and struck out six as his ERA dipped to 1.99 on the season.
Chase McGuire led the offensive charge with two hits and four runs. Nick Nosti and Tyrese McDaniel each had three hits. McDaniel and Eli Rimes each had home runs. For Rimes it was his team-high 9th of the season.
Sonoma State took a 2-0 lead after two in the nightcap, but the Otters showed resiliency by cutting that lead in half in the third. When the Seawolves scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, CSUMB bounced right back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Up 5-3 in the ninth inning, the Seawolves got a scare when pinch hitter Budd Glock hit a solo homer to left center to pull the Otters within one. Coach Goelz then turned to closer Paige Dumont, who set the Otters down in order to record his CCAA-high 10th save of the season.
Brent Lysander had a solid start, striking out a career-high ten batters in six innings. Leo Avila and B.J. Collom each had two hits. Collom lined his team-leading 14th double of the season to left field to drive in SSU's fourth run of the game.
The Seawolves and Otters will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at 11:00 am.
