Seawolves Sweep To Push Streak To 21 Straight

Paige Dumont had a win and a save against the Otters on Saturday
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State baseball team edged Cal State Monterey Bay twice on Saturday afternoon in extend their winning streak to 21 games.  The Seawolves won 8-6 in game one before pulling out a come from behind 5-4 victory in game two.  With the sweep, the Seawolves improve to 34-5, 18-2 CCAA.   The Otters drop to 12-28, 7-21 CCAA.

In addition to lengthening the winning streak to 21 games in a row, the Seawolves improve to 27-1 at home and have won 29 of their last 31 games.

The Otters got on the board first in the opener with a run in the first before SSU scored twice in the third to take their first lead of the game.  Another two-run inning in the fourth and a three-run sixth extended SSU's lead to 7-2.  CSUMB was able to rally to pull within two runs in the eighth, but Seawolf closer Paige Dumont went the final inning and a third without giving up a hit to record his 11th save of the season.

Matt Bush got the start and struck out nine batters through five innings.  It was Bush's seventh win of the season as he improves to 7-1 with a 2.05 ERA.  Chase McGuire went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, and his sixth home run of the season.  Nick Nosti and Tyrese McDaniel also had two hits to lead the Seawolf offensive attack.

Five Otters had two hits apiece as CSUMB outhit the Seawolves 13-11.  Gerry Rommel was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Budd Glock also drove in a pair.  Grayson Adams pitched his way in and out of trouble all day and was tagged with the loss.  He walked six batters, but struck out seven.

Game two was the closest call SSU has had in the midst of the streak.  The Seawolves trailed throughout, digging themselves into a 3-0 hole by the fourth inning.  Sonoma State was able to pull within one in the fifth when David Adler scored on a wild pitch and B.J. Collom delivered an RBI groundout.  The score was tied one inning later on a Leo Avila RBI single, but the tie would be short lived.

In the top of the seventh, CSUMB's Ben Mayberry reached on a bunt after an error by SSU pitcher Nick O'Brien.  The next batter, Gabe Chase, bunted to sacrifice Mayberry over, but O'Brien's throw went high and sent Mayberry all the way home.  O'Brien ended up on third and it looked like a big inning might be in the works.  SSU coach John Goelz turned to his relief ace Paige Dumont and he quickly dispatched the Otters to limit the damage to one run.

Heading to the bottom of the seventh, B.J. Collom drew a leadoff walk, prompting CSUMB to turn to pitcher Ray Nunez.  Nunez got Chase McGuire to pop out, but that was the last productive thing he'd get done.  After Tyrese McDaniel crushed a double down the right field line, the Otters intentionally walked Eli Rimes.  With the bases loaded and one out, Nunez walked Dave Herman to force in the tying run.  He then tossed a wild pitch and Derek Harms scampered home for the game-winner.

David Adler was 2-for-3 in game two for SSU.  Budd Glock, Daniel Gomez, and Jacob Roe each had two hits for the Otters.

Sonoma State will return to action next Tuesday when they host San Francisco State in a non-conference game at 2:00 pm.
