Baseball Runs Win Streak To Ten With Sweep

Dave Herman had two homers and a double in game two
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State baseball team rolled to their ninth and tenth consecutive wins on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay.  SSU won game one 8-7 and took game two 11-5.  The 12th-ranked Seawolves improve to 16-1, 5-0 CCAA while the Otters drop to 4-10, 2-5 CCAA.

The Seawolves are 12-0 at home this season and 47-5 at Seawolf Diamond since the start of the '07 season.

SSU's unbeaten home streak was nearly broken in game one.  The Otters broke open a 6-6 tie with a run in the top of the ninth.  Batting in the bottom of the ninth inning for the first time this year, the Seawolves were quick to strike.  After singles by Kris Haycock and Cameron Cook, Tyrese McDaniel laced a bloop single to right field to tie the game back up at seven.  After an intentional walk to Nick Nosti, Mark Pestorich ended the game with a laser down the left field line.

Haycock led the Seawolves with three hits in the game.  Cook and Pestorich each had two hits and Robert Walden drove in a pair of runs.  Steve Mays led the Otters in game one, going 3-for-3 with a homer.  Travis Babin earned the win in relief.

Game two was tight for the first four and a half innings with the Otters knotting the score at five on an RBI single by Jeff Bernacil.  In the bottom of the inning, however, SSU exploded for six runs to put the game out of reach.  Dave Herman and Trevor Howell each had two home runs to fuel the surge.

Dave Herman went 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double.  He had four RBIs and scored three times after getting his first start at third base.  Pestorich and Haycock each had two hits while Cook knocked his third home run of the year.  Howell's round tripper was his team-high fifth of the season.

Matt Garnett pitched two and two-thirds innings to pick up the win.  Brian Trump was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs.

The series will conclude on Sunday with a single game at 11:00 am.
