Stephanie Luk earned a very hard-fought victory over UC San Diego's Natalie Varnay in the No. 1 singles event, but Sonoma State was unable to overcome a tough Triton squad, who is ranked 19th in the nation, grabbing an 8-1 victory over the Seawolves en route to their 61st consecutive CCAA victory. Sonoma State falls to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play -- both losses coming against UCSD. The Tritons move to 2-0.
In an attempt to beat the rain showers in Sonoma County, the match began with the singles event at an earlier start time than previously scheduled. It didn't seem to bother UC San Diego, as they cruised to the match victory with five victories to start the day.
Luk stepped up to the competition, though, grabbing a 7-5, 6-4 win. It was the second victory in as many days for Luk, as she improves to 2-3 in singles play this season.
Stephanie Hoffmire also gave her opponent, Samantha Yeung, a run for her money in the opening set at the No. 5 spot, but eventually lost both, 7-6, 6-1.
Sonoma State will return to the court on Wednesday to host UC Santa Cruz at 2 p.m.
