SAN RAFAEL, Calif- The Sonoma State women's tennis team got off to a fast start in its 2010-11 debut under interim head coach
Joaquin Lopez on Saturday. In a hidden dual match against Dominican and Academy of Art, the Seawolves swept Dominican, 9-0, but tied Academy of Arts in a singles competition, 3-3.
Brooke McBride (6-3, 6-3),
Haley Hickock (6-0, 6-2),
Stephanie Hoffmire (6-0, 6-1) and Lauren Ha (6-0, 6-2) defeated their Dominican opponents in straight sets. Megan White (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) and Katya Welborn (2-6, 6-0, 10-7) both dropped their first set, but cruised through the second set and won the tiebreaker, giving Sonoma State the 6-0 lead and clinching the victory over the Penguins.
At No. 1 doubles, Hickock and Hoffmire took care of business against the duo of Michele Freitas and Jamie Fernandez (8-5) while McBride/White and Welborn/Ha defeated their opponents by an identical score of 8-4.
In the singles competition against Academy of Art, Hickock (6-3, 6-3), Hoffmire (6-3, 6-0) and Ha (6-2, 6-1) won in straight sets at the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles positions, but the Seawolves lost at the top three spots, foring the 3-3 tie against the Urban Knights.
Sonoma State will head down to Los Angeles on Thursday to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall Regionals.
