ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Despite a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Sonoma State women's tennis squad could not finish off an upset of UC San Diego, falling 5-4 on Friday at the Seawolf Tennis Courts. The loss drops the Seawolves, ranked 48th in the nation, to 8-5 on the season. The 17th-ranked Tritons improve to 7-5.
Behind a spirited effort, the Seawolves emerged from doubles play on top by a point. After the duo of
Anastasia Eliseeva and
Megan White picked up an 8-6 win at No. 1, the Seawolves took their second doubles point when
Stephanie Hoffmire and
Brooke McBride outlasted their opponents at No. 3 in a 9-8 classic.
UC San Diego, however, would bounce back to take the first four singles matches and seal the victory. Sonoma's wins in singles came from
Dana Carollo at No. 1 and White at No. 3, but they were too little, too late.
Carollo's victory upped her mark to 5-5 at the top spot while White improved to 6-2 at three.
The Seawolves will host another former conference rival in Cal State L.A. on Saturday at 11:00 am. They'll host Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday.
