ROHNERT PARK, Calif- While head coach
Joaquin Lopez saw some room for improvement in his team's performance, the Sonoma State women's tennis team came from behind to down Dominican University, 6-3, in the women's tennis spring opener on Saturday in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves took five of the six singles matches to overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles. They will start the 2012 spring campaign at 1-0 while the Penguins drop to 0-1.
In three evenly contested doubles matches, the Penguins came out on top at No. 1 and No. 2. The Seawolves' lone point in doubles came from the No. 3 team of
Lauren Ha and
Sheena Johnson, who were 8-3 winners.
Despite a loss at the top of the chart by No. 1 singles player
Megan White, the Seawolves found their groove in singles. Dominant wins by
Brooke McBride at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1),
Stephanie Hoffmire at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2),
Sheena Johnson at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0), and
Lauren Shafer at No. 6 (6-1, 6-1) gave Sonoma plenty of cushion.
The Seawolves return to the court on Thursday when they head to Arizona to start a four-match road trip. First up is a match with west region foe Montana State-Billings.
