WAIPAHU, Hawai'i -- The Sonoma State women's tennis team shook off a loss at No. 1 doubles to win the final eight matches, cruising to an 8-1 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo on Tuesday to wrap up the Seawolves' three-match trip to the Hawaiian Islands. SSU improves to 8-7 this season and 6-5 against in-region opponents.
After the duo of
Megan White and
Krista Cole fell by a score of 8-3, the pairings of
Stephanie Hoffmire/
Brooke McBride and
Lauren Ha/
Sheena Johnson steamrolled to 8-1 wins to give Sonoma State the early 2-1 lead.
In singles play, Cole, Hoffmire, Ha and Johnson continued SSU's success and won in straight sets, but not without some resistance at No. 2 and No. 5 singles. Cole won her first set 6-3, then pulled out a narrow 7-5 in the second frame to defeat Emilie Laussen. Ha also saw some fight at No. 5 singles against Morrisa Kahakui, but pulled out the 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) win for a straight sets win. Hoffmire (6-3, 6-1) and Johnson (6-1, 6-2) dispatched their opponents with ease. McBride, after being tied 4-4 in the first set, earned the win by retirement.
The toughest match came at No. 1 singles between White and Melanie Viriyapunt, but it was White who came out on top in the third set, 6-3, 6-7 (10-3), 10-8, to solidify the Seawolves' 8-1 win.
Sonoma State will return to action on Friday when it hosts Cal State L.A. in Rohnert Park at Noon on Friday.
