Seawolves Edged By Urban Knights After Sweep Of Argonauts

Lauren Ha has now won seven consecutive matches, including nine of her last 10 for the Seawolves.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- After completing a near perfect sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday morning, the 43rd-ranked Sonoma State women's tennis team battled with 42nd-ranked Academy of Art, but it would be the Urban Knights to pull out the narrow 5-4 victory over the Seawolves on Saturday at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park.  With Saturday's spilt, the Seawolves move to 11-10 overall and 7-8 against in-region, Division II opponents.

To start the day, Sonoma State cruised to an easy 9-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur, allowing just two points in the entire match.  Megan White, Brooke McBride, Stephanie Hoffmire, Kim Alballat and Spencer Trotta posted unblemished 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play.  The pairings of Alballat/Geri Richards and Lauren Shafer/Trotta also completed a clean sweep of their opponents at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

After a short break, the Seawolves took to the court again, but would face an opponent equally as talented in Academy of Art.  Sonoma State would jump out to a 2-1 lead after Hoffmire/McBride (8-5) and Lauren Ha/Sheena Johnson (8-6) dispatched their opponents at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

However, the Urban Knights would come back with wins at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles to take a lead, but only by one point at 4-3, thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 win by Hoffmire at No. 5.  White would play the toughest match of the afternoon, facing ART U's Kunkanda Phukchampa, who is the 13th-ranked singles player in the west region.  White earned the first-set victory, but Phukchampa would come back and win the next two sets to take the win (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) and clinch the match victory for the Urban Knights.  Lauren Ha would complete the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, but Academy of Art would post the 5-4 win over Sonoma State.

Ha earned her seventh straight singles victory, improving to 16-8 this season and 12-5 in dual matches.  The doubles pairing of Alballat and Shafer remain undefeated as partners this season, moving to 4-0 in 2011-12.

With five matches remaining in the 2012 season, Sonoma State will host the next four, including its next match -- a 12:00 p.m. date with No. 33 Cal State Stanislaus next Saturday (Apr. 14) at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park.
