ROHNERT PARK -- After falling behind 2-1 in doubles play, the Sonoma State women's tennis team battled back against Dominican to knot the match at 4-4 and, after losing the first set 3-6,
Sheena Johnson rallied to earn hard-fought wins in the second (6-3) and third (6-4) sets to clinch the 5-4 victory for the Seawolves in their season-opening match on Sunday at the SSU Tennis Courts.
In doubles play,
Megan White and
Lauren Shafer recorded a dominating 8-2 win over Ariana Paradis and Francesca Katafias at No. 3 doubles, but Dominican would earn victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the early 2-1 match lead.
In the singles competition,
Sara Celma (6-0, 6-1),
Lauren Ha (6-4, 6-2) and Shafer (6-1, 6-1) grabbed wins in straight sets at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively, while the Penguins' Marissa Frazer won at No. 3 singles to tie the match at four apiece.
Then, it was at No. 4 singles that Johnson fell behind after losing her first set before coming back to claim victory in the next two sets to start the Seawolves' season off with an exciting 5-4 win.
Sonoma State heads to Arizona this week to compete in the Grand Canyon Invitational on Feb. 7-10, beginning with a matchup with host Grand Canyon on Thursday.
