ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State's
Sara Celma was dominant at the top of the ladder, winning easily in both singles and doubles, but those would be the only points in the Seawolves' column on Saturday afternoon as UC San Diego cruised to a 7-2 win at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves, ranked 46th in the nation and 9th in the west region, drop to 14-8 on the season. The Tritons, ranked 19th and 5th, respectively, improve to 13-6.
Celma, one of the west region's top players, moved to 17-3 on the season in singles play. Her 17 wins are just two behind the all-time single-season record, a stat made more impressive when you consider she didn't play in the fall. The Benicarlo, Spain native dispatched her opponent at No. 1 singles, Melissa Breisacher, by a 6-2, 6-1 score.
Celma teamed up with
Chloe Jolliff at No. 1 doubles to win by an 8-1 margin. The duo improved to 14-5 this season.
The Tritons won the rest of the matches, though they did have a couple of battles on their hands. Jolliff nearly pulled the upset at No. 3 singles, losing in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 12-10.
The Seawolves return to action next Sunday at the Academy of Art. Their final home match of the season is next Friday against UC Santa Cruz.
