DAVIS, Calif. --
Sara Celma picked up another win at No. 1 singles on Saturday afternoon to break Sonoma State's single-season record for victories in a season, but it wouldn't be enough as the Seawolves fell to UC Davis 6-1. Celma won her match to improve to 20-3, breaking a record previously held by Deah Toby (2002) and
Lauren Ha (2012). At 15-10, the Seawolves will see their season end with more wins than in any season since 2000 (15-7).
Celma was certainly not intimidated by stepping up to play NCAA Division I competition. She won her first set 6-4 and led in the second (3-2) before her opponent, Layla Sanders, retired. The native of Benicarlo, Spain finishes the season with five consecutive wins and victories in 13 of her last 14 matches.
She was unable to make it a double on Saturday as she fell in doubles, along with partner
Chloe Jolliff, 7-4. The match was unfinished because the Aggies had already secured the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3.
Jolliff nearly pulled the upset at No. 3 singles, falling 7-6 (7-5) in the first set before dropping the second, 6-1.
The Seawolves enjoyed a fantastic season that saw them go 9-4 at home and 4-1 in neutral court action. As a team, the Seawolves won nearly 59% of their singles matches (108-76) with
Lauren Ha (18-9),
Lauren Shafer (17-11), and
Sheena Johnson (16-13) joining Celma with a winning record.
