ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- After a cancelled scrimmage earlier this week, the 28th-ranked Sonoma State women's tennis team opened the spring season with a bang on Saturday against the Dominican Penguins. The Seawolves started with a 3-0 sweep in doubles, only losing 3 games in the process. They also won five of six singles matches to cruise to an 8-1 victory.
The nation's 21st-ranked doubles team of
Sara Celma and
Kaitlyn Haithcock started the day beating Irina Morozova and Caitlin Aloia by the score of 8-2. Johnson and
Leire Martinez followed with an 8-1 victory over Vicari and Kelly Zwicker.
Lauren Ha and
Karlee Budge then finished the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win over Francesca Katafias and Katie Gomez.
Every singles match was won in straight sets, five of them by Sonoma State. 10th-ranked Celma led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Morozova at No. 1.
Leire Martinez, Katilyn Haithcock,
Lauren Ha, and
Karlee Budge were also all convincing winners.
The Seawolves host UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park. Doubles play begins at 12 p.m.
