#27 Azusa Pacific 6, #28 Sonoma State 3
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- In a match featuring teams stacked right next to each other in the ITA women's tennis national rankings, it was the 27th-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars besting the 28th-ranked Sonoma State Seawolves on Friday morning in Glendale.
Sara Celma, ranked 10th in the country in singles, was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at No. 1, but she was one of just two winners for the Seawolves in singles play as they drop to 1-1 overall.. The Cougars improve to 5-0.
The Seawolves picked up one win in doubles as
Sheena Johnson and
Leire Martinez emerged with an 8-4 victory at No. 2. Like the team competition, No. 1 doubles was a matchup of similarly ranked opponents as the 20th-ranked duo of Emily Harris and Danae Ingwaldson topped 21st-ranked Celma and Haithcock, 8-4.
Following Celma's win at No. 1, Haithcock was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 winner over Ingwaldson at No. 3. Natalie Johnson of APU earned a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win over
Leire Martinez at No. 2.
At No. 5 singles, Sonoma's
Lauren Ha forced a third set by coming back from a 6-4 loss in the first with a 6-1 win in the second. Stephanie Quan, however, prevailed in the third, 6-3.
The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday against 36th-ranked Point Loma Nazarene.
