LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- After knocking off Colorado Mesa, 6-3, earlier in the day, the Sonoma State men's tennis team swept past Colorado Christian, 9-0, to extend its win streak to six games while pulling its overall record to 8-8 this season. The Seawolves will wrap up their annual trip to Colorado on Sunday when they face Metro State at 9:00 am.
In the first match on Saturday,
Jimmy Manning and
Seth Hein knocked off their opponents 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, but Sonoma State would head into singles play trailing in the match, 2-1, despite a resilient effort by
Logan Liddell and
Robert Henry at No. 3 in which they suffered a narrow 9-8 (5) loss.
The tables turned in singles play as the Seawolves battled to win five of the six matches in clinching the 6-3 match victory and avenging last year's 8-1 loss. It began with
Matt Roberts blowing by his opponent at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1) after losing to the same player last season in straight sets.
Daniel Holz (7-5, 6-4) and
Vincent Paganetti (6-2, 6-1) rolled past their opponents at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively, before
Philip Holbrook (7-6 (3), 7-6 (5)) and
Robert Henry (7-6 (5), 7-5) dug deep to grab wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, and secure the 6-3 match victory for Sonoma State.
In the Seawolves' second match of the day, they used their momentum from their early match to blast Colorado Christian, 9-0. Sonoma State only allowed one point in doubles play, then, with the exception of No. 1 singles, cruised to straight-set wins in earning its sixth straight victory.
Philip Holbrook stepped up to play in the top singles spot and won the first set, dropped the second, but rallied to win the 10-point tiebreaker and complete the sweep of the Cougars.
