SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- UC Santa Cruz earned a couple of thrilling doubles matches to open the day, but the Sonoma State women's tennis team responded with straight-set wins in singles play to earn the 7-2 victory on Sunday in Santa Cruz.  The Seawolves, who are ranked at No. 32 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Top 50 Poll, improve to 5-4 on the season.  The Banana Slugs, who are the 25th-ranked team in the ITA Division III poll, remain winless at 0-8.

While the duo of Sheena Johnson and Karlee Budge took home an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, it was the pairings of Sara Celma/Kaitlyn Haithcock and Leire Martinez/Lauren Ha to lose 9-7 and 9-8 (7-5), respectively, putting SSU down 2-1 heading into singles play.  It was then, however, that the Seawolves cruised to wins in straight sets up and down the lineup to win the match.

Sonoma State has 11 scheduled matches to play before the competing in the Pacific West Conference Championships for the first time in program history on Apr. 16-19, with nine of them being played at home, including the next eight.  The long homestand will begin on Friday when the Seawolves play host to Division I Weber State at 11:00 am.
