Seawolves Defeat #33 Sunbirds; Advance To Consolation Final

Sara Celma helped the Seawolves to a 5-2 victory over Fresno Pacific on Friday in Arizona.
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- After the Sonoma State women's tennis team lost two of the three doubles matches, the Seawolves rallied for four singles wins, including Sara Celma's match-clinching victory in three sets to lift SSU into the Pacific West Conference Tournament's consolation bracket final with a 5-3 win over No. 33 Fresno Pacific on Friday in Surprise, Ariz.  Sonoma improves to 17-7 this season and will play No. 25 Point Loma on Saturday at 9:00 am.  The Sunbirds end their season at 10-15.

Sheena Johnson and Karlee Budge earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to begin the match, but the No. 1 and 2 pairings of Fresno Pacific gave the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

FPU added to its match lead after Laure-Anne Josso defeated Haithcock (6-0, 6-1) at No. 3 singles to go up 3-1.  However, SSU began to rally, starting with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Leire Martinez at No. 2 singles.  Budge moved the Seawolves into a tie at 3-3 after a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5, then Johnson followed with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win to put Sonoma one win away from extending its season.

It came down to Sara Celma at No. 1 singles and, after a 6-3 win in the first set, she lost the second, 6-2.  Celma, the eighth-ranked player in Division II and Fresno Pacific's Petra Jurova, the 13th-ranked player in the nation, battled in the third and final set, but it was Celma to emerge as the winner, 6-4, to clinch the match for Sonoma State.

The Seawolves, who entered the PacWest Tournament as the No. 6 seed, will face the No. 5 seed, and 25th-ranked Point Loma (13-12) in the consolation bracket final for fifth place.
