Sonoma Completes Perfect SoCal Trip With 109th Minute Goal

SAN DIEGO, Calif.
--  Scoreless...on the road...late in the game...against one of the Pacific West Conference's top teams.  It feels like we've been here before.  Just two days after freshman McKenzie Maher scored a late goal to knock off Azusa Pacific, fellow freshman Sara Van Wagoner stole the spotlight on Saturday, netting the golden goal under two minutes from the end of double overtime to lift Sonoma State to a 1-0 win over Point Loma.  To borrow a line from Yogi Berra, "It's like déjà vu all over again."  The win gives the Seawolves an impressive 2-0-0 performance on a very tough southern California road trip to begin the season.

As it did on Thursday, the Sonoma defense led the way, stuffing Point Loma Nazarene's attack and allowing just six shots, only three of which were on goal.  To their credit, the Sea Lions were nearly as successful, holding a potent Seawolf offense to only five shots in the first 90 minutes before Sonoma began to break out in the first overtime.

Following three shots in the first overtime and another in the second, it looked like Sonoma might have to settle for a scoreless draw.  With just under two minutes remaining before the whistle, Melissa Lafranchi crossed the ball to the left, where it was met by the head of Van Wagoner and re-directed into the goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Hadidian had another strong game, making three saves to record her second shutout in three days.

The Seawolves will close out their three-game season-opening road trip on Monday with a quick drive down to San Rafael to battle Dominican.  Kick off is slated for 3:00 pm.
