Men's Soccer Sweeps Weekend With 3-0 Win Sunday Over UCSD

ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team took down UC San Diego on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field, 3-0, thanks to goals by Brenton Frame, Sean Callahan and Armando Coronel

The Seawolves have won three straight games, improving to 8-4-2 overall and moving into a tie for sixth place in the CCAA standings with 13 points at 4-3-1.  The Tritons dropped to 5-5-5 (4-3-3 CCAA).

Frame's team-leading seventh goal of the season came in the 29th minute on a penalty kick after a UC San Diego foul in the box.  Callahan netted an insurance goal in the 51st minute, then Coronel sealed the win with his score in the 83rd minute.   The Seawolves outshot the Tritons, 12-8 and goalkeeper Mitch North made two saves in securing his sixth shutout of the season.

Quotes from head coach Marcus Ziemer:

"That was a great win.  UC San Diego is very good, but we were able to control the game by keeping the ball.  Our possession in the attacking 3rd was very good."

"Our defense has been outstanding.  Mitch North made a huge save to prevent the score from going 2-1, which would have made for an interesting last 30 minutes.  Dylan Stafford, Eric Alvarado, Ryan Rohane and Dane Shaffar have been really solid."

"Sean (Callahan) and Jose Avalos are key ingredients for our possession, and they are also tough defensively."

"Josh Sanchez's work right at the midfield is incredible.  He made great runs and got (UCSD) into dangerous positions, and his pressure, especially in transition, was outstanding."

"Brenton (Frame) has been playing very well.  His hold-up play has been outstanding, he is scoring goals and his defensive pressure makes it different on the opponent's center backs."

"We are peaking at the right time.  Every team goes through ups and downs, but we have been playing well and getting results.  We haven't been paying attention to the standings, we are focused on winning one game at a time and it's been working for us.  We are looking forward to Stanislaus State on Friday."
