Sonoma Loses At CPP; To Open CCAA's At Stanislaus Tuesday

POMONA, Calif. -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss at Cal Poly Pomona on the final day of the regular season Saturday, but the Seawolves (10-6-2, 6-5-1 CCAA) finished fifth in the conference standings and will be the No. 5 seed in the 2015 CCAA Championship Tournament, facing No. 4 seed Stanislaus State on Tuesday at 7:00 pm at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to Friday's semifinal in Pomona against No. 1 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills.

"That was a tough game," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "We started well, but they scored early and we had to throw the game plan out of the window."

"We were tired and beat up from Friday, and when it went to 3-0, we cleared the bench and rested guys for Tuesday," Ziemer explained. "The second group did well, and if it weren't for a missed (penalty kick), we might have made a game of it."

"Cal Poly Pomona is very good, especially at home on their small field," said Ziemer.  "We thought we would be okay with the 90-plus degree heat, but it eventually took its toll."

Defending CCAA tournament Champion and this season's tournament host Cal Poly Pomona (8-2-2) also earned a first-round bye for the second-consecutive season and will play as the No. 2 seed.

The Toros and Broncos received automatic bids to the semifinal round of the Tournament, set for Friday, Nov. 6, at Kellogg Field in Pomona. The championship game is set for Sunday, Nov. 8.

Both first-round contests will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 pm. No. 3 seed Cal State LA (8-3-1) will host No. 6 seed UC San Diego (5-3-4) at Jesse Owens Track, while No. 4 seed Stanislaus State (8-3-1) will welcome No. 5 seed Sonoma State (6-5-1) to Warrior Field for the first time this season.
