ROHNERT PARK -- Taylor Acosta was just two points shy of her career-high, dropping in a team-best 15 points in 17 minutes off the bench, but the Sonoma State women's basketball team suffered a 71-56 loss to visiting Maryville in non-conference action Sunday evening at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves fell to 5-7 this season while the Saints, from St. Louis, Missouri, rose to 7-3 after a pair of 15-point wins on their quick two-game California road trip; Maryville defeated Holy Names 70-55 on Saturday night in Oakland.
Sonoma scored the first four points of the contest on a three-pointer by
Kayla Coloyan on its first possession, followed by a made free throw by
Jessica Mitz a minute later. However, Maryville netted nine unanswered points to take a lead it would never relinquish. In fact, the Saints would hold a lead of double-digits for the final three quarters, eventually getting up to their largest lead of 24 points at 62-38 with nine minutes to play in the game en route to their 71-56 win.
Complementing Acosta's 15 points was
Jerrica Crosby, who chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
Leading the way for Maryville was Alex Hillyer, who had game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Sonoma State will take a break from practice and competition for the remainder of the 2015 calendar year before returning to action on New Year's Day at Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff in Seaside is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
