KONA, Hawaii -- The 46th-ranked Sonoma State men's tennis team notched its first victory of the 2015 season, dispatching Hawaii Hilo 7-2 on Friday afternoon in Kona, Hawaii. The Seawolves (1-2) got solid performances from
Philip Holbrook and
Noah Lee at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, while
Blaine Mengert and
Vincent Paganetti pulled out hard-fought victories at No. 4 and No. 5, all of which contributed to the convincing win over the Vulcans.
Sonoma swept all three doubles matches -- Holbrook and Lee won 8-4, Mengert and
Logan Liddell grabbed an 8-6 victory and Weeber and
Sullivan Roche earned an 8-5 triumph.
In singles play, Holbrook cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win in straight sets at No. 1 while Lee dominated his opponent at No. 3 with a pair of 6-1 wins. Mengert would win in straight sets as well, but not without tiebreaking each set by a score of 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3). Paganetti won his first set, lost the second and narrowly pulled out an 11-9 victory in the third-set tiebreaker to win his match.
Daniel Holz (0-6, 1-6) and
Matt Weeber (3-6, 2-6) suffered losses at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to account for the only Hawaii Hilo points.
Sonoma State will wrap up its Hawaii trip on Saturday when it goes head-to-head with No. 2-ranked Hawaii Pacific at 5:00 pm.
