LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Amanda Llerena threw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and
Amanda Rossetta and
Mayleen Mazon went yard for their third home runs of the tournament as the Sonoma State softball team once again earned a mercy-rule victory with a 10-0 blasting of Regis University (Colo.) in five innings on Sunday to wrap up an undefeated weekend (5-0) at the MSUB Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Seawolves rise to 6-2 this season. Sonoma's offense was unstoppable this weekend as it recorded a .427 batting average with seven doubles, two triples and 16 home runs, outscoring its opponents 54-21 and outhitting them 61-35 in the five games. Rossetta, Mazon,
Holli Brown and
Taylor Batey all smashed three home runs each while Llerena went 3-0 with one save, sporting a 2.95 ERA and striking out 17 in 19.0 innings of work in the circle.
It didn't take long for the Seawolves to make a big statement early, posting seven runs on the scoreboard before the Rangers even came to bat. A total of 11 SSU batters came to the plate in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Rossetta reached on a fielders choice to score
Ancia Purdy. Mazon came up next and launched a three-run home run to left field to put the Seawolves up 4-0. After three consecutive walks to Sonoma batters, Purdy laced a three-run triple to left field for the 7-0 advantage.
In the second inning, Mazon added an RBI on a groundout to shortstop, scoring
Holli Brown. Then, in the top of the fourth with an 8-0 lead, Rossetta delivered the dagger, a two-run bomb to right center for the 10-0 lead and eventual winning score.
Meanwhile, Llerena (4-1) was just one out away from a five-inning perfect game, but an infield single by Regis in the bottom of the fifth inning ruined the occasion. She struck out eight of the 16 batters she faced to earn the victory.
Purdy and Rossetta went 2 for 3, each with three RBI. Mazon was 1 for 3 with the home run and a team-best four RBI.
Sonoma State will return home next weekend to open the CCAA schedule against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The four-game series will start with a doubleheader on Friday at 12:00 pm and wrap up on Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
