ROHNERT PARK -- Holli Brown put down the game-winning sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to lift the Sonoma State softball team to a come-from-behind 5-4 win before
Mayleen Mazon tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout in game two to highlight the Seawolves' 6-0 win, capping the doubleheader sweep over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park.
Sonoma has now won seven straight games, improving to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in CCAA play. The Toros fall to 2-7 (0-2 CCAA).
Ancia Purdy had an outstanding day at the plate, going 5 for 8 with a triple, two stolen bases and five runs scored while Brown was 3 for 5 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Keeley Ray added three hits with a triple and an RBI.
Game 1: Sonoma State 5, CSU Dominguez Hills 4It didn't take very long for the Seawolves to take the lead, thanks to a two-run home run by Brown that scored Purdy. However, the Toros responded with four runs in their next at bat on two triples and a single to take a 4-2 lead.
Slowly but surely, Sonoma State began to chip away and in the fourth,
Alison Strycula, who pinch ran for
Amanda Rossetta after she singled to lead off the inning, stole second and got to third base on a groundout by Mazon. As
Taylor Batey drew ball four, Strycula got CSUDH catcher Kaci McGinnis to throw down to third to get her back to the base, but the throw sailed down the left field line allowing Strycula to score, cutting the deficit in half at 4-3. In the fifth, Purdy tied the contest at 4-4 when she scored on a wild pitch from Jamie Duran, setting up the heroics for Brown in the seventh inning.
The seventh got started on a Purdy single, followed by a single by Ray. During Brown's at bat, Purdy stole third, allowing head coach
Jennifer Bridges to call for the suicide squeeze bunt in which the Seawolves did perfectly to score the game-winning run in Purdy from third.
Amanda Llerena improved to 5-1 in the pitching circle this season; she allowed four runs on just three hits and struck out 10. Purdy went 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Game 2: Sonoma State 6, CSU Dominguez Hills 0While Mazon kept the Toros off the scoreboard, the Seawolves' offense continued to shine, recording 10 hits in the nightcap, three off the bat of Brown. Sonoma took the early 1-0 lead on another RBI by Brown, scoring Purdy in the bottom of the first. In the fifth inning with runners on first and third, Brown stole second and on the throw, Ray stole home for the 2-0 lead. Brown eventually came around to score on a Rossetta sacrifice fly later in the inning for the 3-0 lead.
To put the game out of reach, SSU plated three runs in the sixth, two on a two-base throwing error by CSUDH third baseman Jazmyne Cortinas scoring
Ashley Long and
Ally Bryant and the other on a Ray sacrifice fly scoring Purdy, to account for the 6-0 final, in favor of the Seawolves.
Mazon (1-1) allowed just five hits and struck out six in her complete-game win.
Sonoma State and Cal State Dominguez Hills will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
