ROHNERT PARK -- Leire Martinez stunned Academy of Art's Nina Gajdosikova, the 43rd-ranked singles player in the nation, in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), but the Sonoma State women's tennis team fell on the losing side of a 6-3 score on Friday afternoon at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves, ranked 23rd in the nation, fall to 3-3 this season while the Urban Knights, ranked 14th in Division II, improve to 2-0.
In doubles play,
Jordyn Kearney and
Hillary Fazekas grabbed an 8-3 victory at No. 3 and at No. 1, Martinez and
Jacquelyn Ward pushed Gajdosikova and Annika Schneider to the brink, forcing a seven-point tiebreaker, but the Academy of Art duo prevailed with the 9-8 (7-4) win. The Urban Knights also captured an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to take the 2-1 match lead after doubles play.
In singles play, Martinez sprinted past the 43rd-ranked Gajdosikova for the Seawolves' second point and her doubles partner, Ward, earned a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles for point number three, but that's all Sonoma State would muster against Academy of Art.
Sonoma State will host UC Santa Cruz on Saturday at the SSU Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 1:00 pm.
