ROHNERT PARK -- Amanda Llerena tossed her first-career complete-game no-hitter in the opener and the offense exploded for eight runs on 13 hits in the nightcap as the Sonoma State softball team swept a Friday doubleheader against visiting Cal State San Bernardino with scores of 4-0 and 8-1 at a windy Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves have won 12 of their last 13 games, improving to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA. The Coyotes dropped to 9-10 and 1-5 in conference action.
Game 1: Sonoma State 4, Cal State San Bernardino 0It began as a traditional pitcher's duel between Llerena and Cal State San Bernardino's Cassandra Williams as the two combined to allow just one hit and four baserunners through the first five and a half innings. It was in the bottom of the sixth when Sonoma State broke the scoreless tie with four runs to take the 4-0 lead.
Olivia Lucchese opened the inning by drawing a walk before
Leanna Georges singled to center field. The two would move into scoring position on a wild pitch by Williams when
Keeley Ray dropped down a squeeze bunt and it was Lucchese to come sliding in underneath the tag at home plate for the first run of the game. Two batters later,
Taylor Batey laced a single to left field scoring Georges and Ray, then two more batters later,
Mayleen Mazon singled home Batey for the fourth run of the inning.
That's all Sonoma State would need for the victory as Llerena (7-2) retired CSU San Bernardino in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win and the no-hitter. While it was her first complete-game no-hitter, she participated in a combined no-hitter last season with former teammate
Katy Bihl in a win against Notre Dame de Namur on Feb. 12, 2014. Llerena had to throw just 78 pitches to capture the feat on Friday, she walked one and struck out five.
The Seawolves managed just four hits of their own on offense against CSUSB's Williams (7-5), who struckout six SSU batters in the 25 that she faced, which was only one more than Llerena faced.
Game 2: Sonoma State 8, Cal State San Bernardino 1It didn't take long for the Seawolves to get the bat going against the Coyotes and their starting pitcher Jamie Nelson (2-4), plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Batey grounded out, but scored
Ancia Purdy in the process,
Carlie Daniel singled home Ray,
Alison Strycula tripled to score Daniel and
Amanda Rossetta brought in Strycula with a single to give the hosts an comfortable 4-0 lead.
The Coyotes finally recorded their first hit of the day with one out in the second inning, but didn't score until the fourth on an RBI single by Williams. That was all they could muster against SSU starter
Mayleen Mazon (4-1) who allowed five hits and the one run, striking out two. In fact, both Llerena and Mazon combined to shut down the CCAA's best hitter in Nicole Nobbe, entered the day hitting a ridiculous .674, but an 0 for 6 effort on Friday dropped her average to .596, which still leads the league.
Sonoma tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Back-to-back RBI triples by Purdy and Ray, then an RBI single by
Holli Brown put a cap on the 8-1 victory in game two (Purdy's triple scored
Ashley Long and
Jordann White).
Though Purdy saw her 13-game hit streak end in the opener, she rebounded to post a perfect 4 for 4 effort in game two with a triple, three stolen bases, two RBI and two runs scored. Ray and Daniel also had two hits to pace the Seawolf offense.
Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino will wrap up its four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:00 am.
