#23 Seawolves Cruise Past Hawks In Season Opener, 8-1

ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's tennis team, ranked 23rd in the most recent ITA/NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Top 50 Rankings, got its 2015 season off on the right foot with an 8-1 victory over Holy Names on Saturday at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves (1-0) will head to Hawaii next week for four matches in three days, beginning Thursday.

The match started in singles play and it was Jordyn Kearney to blow right past her opponent in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) at No. 3 singles for SSU's first point of the day.  The Seawolves also got victories in straight sets from Leire Martinez (6-3, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, Kaitlyn Haithcock (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2, Karlee Budge (6-1, 7-5) at No. 4 and Jacquelyn Ward (6-2, 6-2) at No. 5.  Julie Rea won her first set at No. 6 singles, but eventually fell in three sets (6-3, 0-6, 2-6), but Sonoma had already clinched the match victory with five singles wins.

Both Kearney and Haithcock entered Saturday's match ranked as one of the Top 20 singles players in the West Region; Kearney at No. 20 and Haithcock at No. 13.  The duo, also ranked ninth in the West Region in doubles, teamed up to play at No. 2 and dispatched their opponents 8-3, matching the winning score by Martinez and Ward at No. 1 singles.  Rea and Budge also captured a victory at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-5.

Due to an uncertain weather forecast, the Seawolves' original opponent scheduled for Saturday, UC Santa Cruz, cancelled its trip to Sonoma County, and with Sunday's forecast calling for more rain, Holy Names made the quick trip up from Oakland to get Sunday's match in a day early.

Sonoma State will open up play in Hawaii on Thursday against fourth-ranked BYU-Hawaii at 1:00 pm.
