ROHNERT PARK -- Jordyn Kearney blew right past her opponent in straight sets at No. 3 singles to record the match-clinching fifth point, lifting the No. 25 Sonoma State women's tennis team to a narrow 5-4 victory over No. 22 Point Loma on Tuesday at the SSU Tennis Courts. The Seawolves improve to 7-5 this season and the Sea Lions fall to 5-7.
Kearney and doubles partner
Kaitlyn Haithcock, along with the duo of
Karlee Budge and
Hillary Fazekas, gave Sonoma State the 2-1 match lead with 8-4 and 8-2 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Budge opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Kirsty Mountain at No. 5 before
Leire Martinez got past Madeline Cunningham 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 for the Seawolves' third and fourth points of the match. Not long after Martinez's win, Kearney put the exclamation point on the match with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3. Haithcock rallied from a set down to force a third-set tiebreaker, but her bid for SSU's sixth point fell short with a 3-6, 6-0, 5-7 loss at No. 2.
Sonoma State will head to Reno, Nev. this weekend to play Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday and Nevada on Sunday.
