ARCATA, Calif. -- The 20th-ranked Sonoma State softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday -- 14-4 in six innings in game one and 6-1 in game two -- to host Humboldt State at the HSU Softball Field in Arcata, Calif.
Despite the two losses, the Seawolves maintain first place in the CCAA standings by one-half game over Cal State Monterey Bay with a 14-5 record (22-7 overall). The Lumberjacks jumped into a tie for second place with CSUMB, rising to 14-6 in the CCAA (21-10 overall).
Keeley Ray had another outstanding effort at the plate on Saturday, going 3 for 6 with two doubles and a run scored. The Seawolves, however, were held to just 11 combined hits in the doubleheader, much different than Friday's offensive showcase.
In the opener, the 'Jacks put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Seawolves came back with two runs in the second and another in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but the hosts exploded for three runs in the bottom of the third inning and six runs in the fourth to jump out to an 11-3 lead. Sonoma added a run in the top of the fifth to extend the ballgame, but Humboldt's Julie Pena delivered a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to induce the eight-run mercy rule and the 14-4 HSU win.
In the nightcap, the 'Jacks scored runs in pairs - two in the third inning, two in the fifth and two in the sixth -- and the only offense SSU could muster was in the top of the sixth when
Ancia Purdy scored from third base on a throwing error by the HSU catcher to account for the 6-1 score in favor of the hosts.
Sonoma State will step out of conference play next weekend to compete in the annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. The Seawolves will play a neutral site game against Western Washington on Thursday at 4:00 pm in Turlock before playing their first TOC game on Friday at 12:15 pm against Western Oregon.
