No. 21 Seawolves Blast Western Washington, 14-2, In Turlock

BOX SCORE TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team exploded for 14 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of four defensive errors, cruising to a 14-2 victory over Western Washington in a neutral site game on a warm Thursday afternoon in Turlock.

The Seawolves, ranked 21st in the nation in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 23-7 this season.  The Vikings, a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), falls to 14-11.

Ancia Purdy scored twice on Thursday, breaking the all-time runs record in program history with 134.  She is also three hits from breaking SSU's all-time hit record of 233.

After a scoreless first inning, the Seawolves exploded for seven runs in the top of the second inning, spraying hits left and right, in addition to taking advantage of three defensive errors.  Aubrie Tolliver got the scoring started with an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Holli Brown.  Brown then stole third and came home to score on a throwing error by the WWU catcher for the 3-0 lead.

On a base on balls to Leanna Georges, Karly Macadangdang stole third and was able to score on another throwing error by the catcher. Georges crossed home plate when Ancia Purdy put down a bunt single, and on the attempt by the third baseman to throw Purdy out, it sailed down the right field line allowing Georges to score for the 6-0 advantage. Run number seven of the inning came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alison Strycula scoring Keeley Ray, it also happened to be the first out of the inning, but it was 7-0 in favor of Sonoma State.

Western Washington got a run back in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double, but five more runs would cross the plate for the Seawolves in the next half inning to take a commanding 12-1 lead.  Runs would score on batted balls by Georges, Purdy, Paige McIntosh and Jena Kaser.

Two more runs came across the plate in the top of the fifth inning on a two RBI double by Tolliver for the 14-1 advantage.

The Vikings would plate a run in their final at bat on a sacrifice fly, but that would be all they could muster in the blowout loss.

10 of the 12 Seawolves to appear at the plate in the contest recorded a hit, including two each by Purdy, Ray and Tolliver.  Tolliver led the way with three RBI.

Sonoma State will remain in Turlock as it will continue play on Friday in the annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.  The Seawolves will play three games Friday – they face Western Oregon at 12:15 pm, Montana State Billings at 3:30 pm and Holy Names at 6:00 pm.
