No. 21 Seawolves Go 2-1 On Opening Day Of TOC In Turlock

BOX SCORES:  SSU 8, WOU 0 (5 inn)  |  SSU 8, MSUB 7  |  HNU 4, SSU 1

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Amanda Llerena went 1-0 and recorded a save, striking out 23 batters in 11 shutout innings, but the 21st-ranked Sonoma State softball team ran out of steam in its third game of the day to finish day one of the 14th Annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, with a 2-1 record after wins over Western Oregon (8-0, 5 innings) and Montana State Billings (8-7) before falling to Holy Names (4-1).  The Seawolves improve to 25-8 this season.

Llerena started the day off with nine straight strikeouts against Western Oregon, setting the tone for her effort in the circle.  She helped secure an 8-0 shutout win in five innings over the Wolves, then started and pitched the first five innings in the win over the Yellowjackets.  She was replaced by Mazon in the sixth inning with a 7-0 lead, but was eventually called upon to close out the game and effectively earned the save in the 8-7 win over MSUB.  In the Seawolves' third game of the day, the team just simply ran out of steam, falling to Holy Names, thanks to five defensive errors in the contest.

Not only was Llerena on fire, so was Ancia Purdy, who recorded five hits and broke SSU's all-time hits record of 233; she now has 236 career hits and already has more hits this season than she did all of last season.  Purdy went 5 for 10 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.  Carlie Daniel went 4 for 6 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI, the home run (of the solo variety) was the only run scored by the Seawolves in the loss to Holy Names.

Sonoma State will wrap up pool play in the Tournament of Champions on Saturday with two games -- 8:45 am against Northwest Nazarene, then 11:00 am against Simon Fraser.  The Seawolves will then have to wait and see which bracket title they will be playing for on Sunday until all of Saturday's pool play games have been completed late Saturday night.
