Sonoma Splits Pair Of One-Run Games; Goes 3-2 In Pool Play

TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State softball team held off a furious rally by Northwest Nazarene to win 9-8 on Saturday morning before dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to Simon Fraser in the afternoon to wrap up pool play of the 14th Annual Tournament of Champions with a 3-2 record.

The 21st-ranked Seawolves (26-9) finished fourth in Pool A and will face Dominican in the semifinals of the Platinum Bracket on Sunday at 9:00 am at Pedretti Field 5.  The winner between SSU and Dominican at 9:00 am will play the winner of the other Platinum semifinal game between Simon Fraser and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2:30 pm for the Platinum title, also on Field 5.

#21 Sonoma State 9, Northwest Nazarene 8

The Seawolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings on RBI's from Keeley Ray, Taylor Batey, Ancia Purdy and Carlie Daniel, in addition to a double-steal attempt that allowed Daniel to score on the play.

However, the Crusaders posted five runs over the next two innings amidst an RBI single by Ashley Long in the bottom of the third, closing the gap to one run, a 6-5 advantage for SSU.  In the bottom of the fifth, Leanna Georges scored Holli Brown with a single up the middle.  Then, in the sixth, Daniel laced a double to right center, but a misfire on the throw in from the NNU right fielder allowed Daniel to round the bases for a 8-5 lead.  A couple batters later, Brown singled home Rossetta for another insurance run to make it 9-5 that would prove to be crucial to Sonoma's win.

In their final at bat, the Crusaders got a three-run home run from Kiahna Brown with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Amanda Llerena would replace starter Mayleen Mazon to close out the game and secure the victory for the Seawolves.  Mazon improved to 7-3; she allowed eight runs on nine hits and six walks, but struck out eight.  Llerena notched her fourth save of the season (and her second of the weekend) for inducing the final out of the game.

Daniel, Rossetta, Brown, Long and Georges all had two hits each for SSU, which tallied 14 for the game.

Simon Fraser 4, #21 Sonoma State 3

In the bottom of the second inning, Simon Fraser pinch hitter Nicole Ratel launched a 1-0 pitch from Llerena up and over the center field fence with the bases loaded to give the Clan a 4-0 lead.

Sonoma State chipped away at the deficit, getting a run in the third inning on another double-steal attempt that allowed Ray to score.  An inning later, Karly Macadangdang brought home Aubrie Tolliver with a squeeze bunt, then Macadangdang came around to score on a couple of defensive miscues by Simon Fraser, cutting the deficit down to one run at 4-3.

In their last chance, the Seawolves were able to load the bases, but with two outs, Simon Fraser got Brown to line out to second base to end the game.

Llerena suffered the loss, falling to 15-6; she allowed the four runs on the grand slam in the second inning, giving up six hits and one walk, while striking out three.  Ray and Brown had two hits apiece in the contest.
