ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State baseball team got its six-game week off to a great start by sweeping the Academy of Art with a 9-2 win in game one and a walkoff 2-1 victory in extra innings in game two Wednesday at Seawolf Diamond. With the wins, the Seawolves creep closer to the .500 mark by improving their overall record to 7-9. Academy of Art falls to 3-13.
GAME 1: Sonoma State 9, Academy of Art 2Sonoma State got ahead early in game one and never looked back.
Eric Ehlow reached on a bases loaded fielder's choice to the shortstop in the first inning that scored
Steven Nagy from third base to make it 1-0 Seawolves and advanced
Jourdan Weiks to third base with one out. The next batter,
Alex Crosby, hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Nagy to make it a two-run first inning for the Seawolves. Sonoma State blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth by scoring four runs to make it 7-0. The big hit of the fourth inning was a pinch-hit two-run single by
Hayden Hibberd that scored Weiks and Nagy.
No Seawolf had more than one hit in game one, but it was a team-wide contribution that led to the nine-run, nine-hit attack. Hibberd and Crosby had two RBI's each. Weiks had an RBI and scored three runs.
Sonoma State used five pitchers (
Cody Bennett,
Casey Hes,
Blake Aldrete,
Matt Hammonds and
Matt Manfre) to stifle the Urban Knight bats, by holding them to three hits and one earned run. Bennett (1-0) picked up his first win of the season by going two innings and allowing no-hits and striking out three.
Brady McLane (1-3) took the loss for the Academy of Art, going 3 1/3 allowing seven earned runs on four hits and five walks. Joseph Marchini went 1 for 4 with an RBI for the Urban Knights.
GAME 2: Sonoma State 2, Academy of Art 1 (8 innings)It took extra innings to settle things in game two, but Matt Richards scored from third base on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth to send #NomaNation home happy with a doubleheader sweep. With one out in the eighth inning, Richards reached on an error by the Urban Knights' second baseman and then stole second and third base before the eventual passed ball allowed Richards to score.
Rupert Watson had the other RBI when he hit a ground ball to the AAU shortstop that scored
Cameron Merriwether from third base in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0.
Ehlow, Merriwether, and
Cody Morris each had one hit for Sonoma State.
Daniel Caresio got on base twice with walks.
Once again, five pitchers (
Wade Berryhill,
Anthony Pezzola,
Taylor Toccalino,
Gerald Jamerson and
Ricky Clark) combined to halt the offensive efforts of the Urban Knights in game two. Clark (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season pitching a perfect top of the eighth to earn his first win of 2015 and first-career victory for Sonoma State.
Nate Gercken (2-3) pitched a great game for Urban Knights, but came away with the loss going 7 1/3, while allowing an earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. James Singzon went 3 for 4 for the Academy of Art.
The homestand continues on Friday afternoon in CCAA play against Cal State San Bernardino in the first of four-game series, starting with game one at 2:00 P.M.
