ROHNERT PARK -- After a humbling 10-2 loss in the opener, the Sonoma State baseball team made up for it in thrilling fashion, thanks to a walkoff solo home run by
Dustyn Macaluso in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the hosts to a 3-2 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino in the nightcap salving the doubleheader split on Saturday at Seawolf Diamond.
The Seawolves move to 9-10 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA. The Coyotes went to 4-16 and 2-9 in conference play.
GAME 1: CSU San Bernardino 10, Sonoma State 2A three-run top of the fourth inning for the Coyotes spelled doom for the Seawolves in game one. The Coyotes would go on to add five runs in the seventh inning and went on to defeat Sonoma State, 10-2. The two runs for the Seawolves came in the first and sixth inning.
Daniel Caresio scored on a passed ball in the first and
Philip Ramos grounded into a double play that scored
Eric Ehlow form third base in the sixth.
Cody Morris collected two hits in four plate appearances for the Seawolves.
Haydon Turpin took the loss (1-1) for the Seawolves going six innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Kamden Haglund got the win for the Coyotes going six innings and giving up two earned runs and four hits with four strikeouts. Aaron Owen went 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBI's.
GAME 2: Sonoma State 3, CSU San Bernardino 2The Seawolves were cruising along thanks to the brilliant pitching of
Ryan Luna, who didn't give up an earned run with two hits and seven strikeouts over seven innings. Luna didn't allow his first hit until the fifth inning. The Seawolves carried a 2-0 lead into the seventh and final inning, but couldn't hold the lead when a Seawolf error got two runs home to tie the game.
However, the aforementioned Macaluso walk-off home run made sure the game-tying error in the seventh wouldn't come back to haunt the Seawolves. The Seawolves got ahead early in the game with run scoring walks to
Cameron Merriwether and Macaluso that scored Morris and
Steven Moen respectively.
Macaluso went 1 for 2 with two RBI's on the day.
Jourdan Weiks and Moen each had hits for the Seawolves.
DeVon Golden picked up the win (1-1) for Sonoma State.
Dylan Mitchell got the loss (0-2) for the Coyotes after allowing the Macaluso home run. Tyler Wells started for the Coyotes and went 5 1/3 innings giving up an earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts.
The four-game series concludes Sunday with one game at Seawolf Diamond. First pitch is 11:00 A.M.
