SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Spurred by a 3-0 sweep in doubles, the Sonoma State women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win over Dominican University on Saturday afternoon in San Rafael. The Penguins, competing with just five players, were no match for the 24th-ranked Seawolves, who improved to 15-7 on the season.
The Seawolves have won 9 of their last 11 matches, including nine in a row against NCAA Division II competition. They haven't lost to a fellow Division II school since March 8th. They now lead the all-time series against Dominican, which dates back to 1997, 22-0.
While the Penguins battled in doubles, both Sonoma teams -
Leire Martinez/
Jacquelyn Ward at No. 1 and
Jordyn Kearney/
Hillary Fazekas at No. 2 - picked up victories. The Seawolves won 8-3 at No. 1 and 8-5 at No. 2. Sonoma State was awarded a point by default at No. 3.
One of the most anticipated matches of the day featured
Leire Martinez and Rickiemae Torres at the No. 1 spot. Martinez, ranked 47th in the nation, topped Torres, currently unranked, but ranked as high as No. 36 in the fall, 6-2, 2-0 (retired).
The Seawolves also earned singles wins from Kearney,
Karlee Budge, Ward, and Fazekas. Fazekas won her match at No. 6 by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
Sonoma State closes out the regular season on Sunday in Oakland against Holy Names.
