SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Leire Martinez and Jacquelyn Ward held off their opponents at No. 1 doubles for a narrow 9-7 victory, but it would be the only point scored by the 24th-ranked Sonoma State women's tennis team in a 5-1 loss to 11th-ranked Academy of Art on Thursday in the opening round of Pacific West Conference Championships at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club in Surprise, Ariz. 

The Seawolves, who are the No. 6 seed in the tournament, falls to 16-8 this season and will take on No. 7-seed Point Loma in the consolation semifinals on Friday at 2:00 pm.  The Urban Knights (12-4), the No. 3 seed, moves on to face No. 2-seed Hawaii Pacific in the PacWest semis, also on Friday.

After the Seawolves got their only point by way of Martinez and Ward, the Urban Knights took victories of 8-2 and 8-5 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, to take a 2-1 match lead into singles.

Once in the singles competition, Sonoma State suffered three quick, straight-set losses at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 for the fifth and match-clinching points to Academy of Art, signaling the sudden end to the other three matches in progress.

Sonoma State and Point Loma played one match this season and it was a 5-4 win in favor of SSU back on Mar. 10 in Rohnert Park.
