Sonoma State Earns Doubleheader Sweep Of Cal State East Bay

ROHNERT PARK-- A three-run sixth inning for the Sonoma State offense led the Seawolves to a game one victory, followed by the clutch-hitting of Alex Crosby and  great pitching by Ryan Luna to clinch a doubleheader sweep of visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday at Seawolf Diamond.  With the two wins on Friday for the Seawolves, they improve their CCAA record to 14-13 and 20-16 overall. The Pioneers fall to 4-19 in the conference and 7-23 overall.

GAME 1:
The Seawolves were cruising along with a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning, but saw the Pioneers plate four runs to take a 5-4 lead. The one-run lead wouldn't stand for long as the Seawolves sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs to retake the lead, 7-5. Adam Manzer led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on the same play on a throwing error. Spencer Neve singled to bring home Manzer to tie the game. Later in the inning with Neve on third and Jourdan Weiks at first, Crosby singled to right field to break the tie at 6-5. The last run of the inning would come when Philip Ramos hit a groundball to second that was misplayed by the second basemen and Weiks would score from third.  The relief pitching of Devin Alexander would take over for the remainder of the game and the Seawolves would go to the intermission with a 7-5 victory.

Daniel Caresio, Weiks, Crosby, and Manzer each had two hits for the Seawolves. The Seawolves had 12 hits total.  Neve had two RBI's to lead the Seawolves in that category.

DeVon Golden started and pitched six innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits and seven strikeouts in collecting his second win against three losses. Alexander pitched three innings and allowed one hit and struck out three. Alexander earned his first save of the year.

Jacob Phillips started for the Pioneers and went five innings and allowed one earned run on eight hits. Cole Compton took the loss (0-1) in relief. Rudy Navarro went 3 for 3 to lead the offense.

GAME 2:
Alex Crosby and Ryan Luna combined to be important pieces in completing the doubleheader sweep in the 1-0 win. Crosby came up with Weiks on second base and one out and delivered the game winning single to centerfield that easily allowed Weiks to score from second. Luna turned in another great performance as he tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout and struck out nine in earning his fourth win of the season against two defeats. The nine strikeouts for Luna tied his season-high. He currently holds down second place in the CCAA in that category.

The Crosby single was one of three hits for the Seawolves. Weiks and Brett Sesma had the other two.

Cal State East Bay's Alex Vesia took the loss (2-4) pitching six innings and giving up the earned run on the Crosby single and allowed three hits and struck out five. Jason Fletcher went 2 for 3 to lead the Pioneers.

Sonoma State will go for the series sweep of Cal State East Bay on Saturday morning starting at 11:00 A.M.
