Softball Eliminated From CCAA Tourney After Loss To 'Jacks

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Sonoma State softball team earned a 6-3 victory over Chico State in the first elimination game of the day, but the weekend came to an abrupt end a couple of hours later with an 8-1 loss to Humboldt State in the second elimination game on Saturday at the CCAA Championships in Stockton.

The Seawolves (39-19) will return home and await word on its NCAA postseason fate.  Ranked at No. 5 in last week's NCAA Division II West Region rankings, Sonoma State will need to be among the top eight in the final regional poll, which will be unveiled with the rest of the NCAA tournament field via a live selection show on NCAA.com Monday at 7:00 am Pacific Time.

An RBI single by Ashley Long and a two-run home run by Jena Kaser gave Sonoma State a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Chico State.  The Wildcats responded with three runs over the next two innings to knot the game at 3-3, but it didn't take long for the Seawolves to retake the lead.  Mayleen Mazon laced an RBI triple to right field, followed by an RBI double by Karly Macadangdang to put SSU up 5-3 after three innings of play.  Another run came home in the fifth on a fielding error by Chico to account for the 6-3 win, keeping Sonoma alive in the CCAA tournament.

Mazon got the start, going the first two and two-thirds innings before being replaced by Amanda Llerena, who allowed just one hit in the final four and a thirds innings.  The Seawolves pounded out 13 hits in the contest, including two apiece from Keeley Ray, Long, Amanda Rossetta, Mazon and Macadangdang.

Thirty minutes later, Sonoma State went up against Humboldt State in the second elimination game of the day, but the Lumberjacks scored once in the first, five times in the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.  The only run for Sonoma State was recorded in the bottom of the fifth when Ancia Purdy scored Aubrie Tolliver with an RBI single.  Tolliver led the team offensively against HSU, going 2 for 3 at the plate.  Ray was held hitless -- and off the bases -- in game two, snapping her streak of 57 games to reach base safely, but it will go down as the new all-time record in the CCAA.

Llerena (24-12) was the pitcher of record in both contests on Saturday, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out seven in eight innings of work.  Mazon, Carlie Daniel and Gabby Dupree all saw time in the circle, too.
