Luna Lifts Sonoma To 1-0 Road Win Over Point Loma Nazarene

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A Kristal Luna header accounted for the only goal in a defensive battle between Sonoma State and Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday as the Seawolves emerged with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.  The win, Sonoma's second on an extremely difficult seven-game road trip to open the season, capped off a strong weekend that saw the team go unbeaten against two teams that expect to vie for an NCAA berth come November.   Sonoma State improves to 2-1-1 on the season while Point Loma drops to 2-2-0.

Saturday's victory comes 48 hours after the Seawolves drew 0-0 with California Baptist.  PLNU and CBU, both relative newcomers to the Pacific West Conference and Division II, went a combined 23-8-4 in 2014.

On Saturday, the teams were locked in a defensive duel through the first 45 minutes, combining for just three shots apiece in the first half.  The game-winning goal came in the 60th minute after a corner kick bandied about the box for Luna to put a head on it and re-direct into the net.  It's the first goal of the season for the two-time all-conference performer and the third of her career.

The Sonoma State defense earned high marks for holding the Sea Lions off, weathering a storm that saw the home side attempt seven shots between the goal and the final whistle.  The final tally saw PLNU attempt 11 shots (4 on goal) and SSU 7 (3 on goal).

Ashley Luis made four saves in earning her third clean sheet of the season.

The Seawolves will start conference play next weekend with yet another soujourn to Southern California.  They will face reigning CCAA champion Cal State L.A. on Friday before heading to Carson to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.  The Seawolves will return home on September 27th when they host Chico State.
