SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Sonoma State Seawolves' eight game winning streak was ended by the #14 Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes Friday night in three sets 20-25, 23-25, and 19-25. This puts the Seawolves at a 14-10 overall record, and 12-5 in the CCAA and the Coyotes 20-4 overall and 14-2 in the CCAA.
Caiti Wiesner lead the offense in kills with 13,
Rachel Andrews (8) and
Calan Seitz (7) followed. Andrews and Wiesner had three blocks apiece and Seitz and
Kelsey McIntire two apiece.
Courtney Seda had 30 assists and
Ashleigh Phelps had 20 digs with
Lexi Mudd following with nine.
The Coyotes opened the match with two service aces against the Seawolves. It was 4-0 on the board before Sonoma got the ball. They were down by four points at 8-12 but came back to tie the set at 12 all thanks in part to kills by
Emily Papale and Wiesner. Again, the Coyotes surged ahead, this time to 14-17 but an attack error got the ball back into Sonoma's hands. Two kills from McIntire, and one from Seda tied the set at 17 all and forced a San Bernardino timeout. Again, the score was tied at 20 all highlighted by a kill by Wiesner, block by McIntire, and a coyote error. The next timeout was called by Sonoma at 20-22, after that three Coyote kills ended the set in favor of San Bernardino 20-25.
The second set saw multiple tied scores. It opened with the Seawolves up 3-1 off of an attack error by the Coyotes, and kills from Andrews and Wiesner. The score tied eight more times before 21 all. At that point in the set the Coyotes got two kills to up themselves 21-23 at which point Sonoma called a timeout. They came out of the timeout and tied the score at 23 off two Wiesner kills, then it was San Bernardino's turn to call a timeout. Unfortunately, they came out of the timeout to earn a kill and stuff block the Seawolves to win 23-25.
For the third and final set the two teams were tight back and forth, however a late set surge from the Coyotes ended the night. At 14 all they went on a 5-11 run won the match 19-25.
The Seawolves will play Cal Poly Pomona at 7pm Saturday November 12 in Pomona.
