ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Senior Night for the Seawolves was a sweet one as Sonoma State swept Humboldt State 25-23, 25-17, and 25-20. They extend their winning streak to eight and have a 12-4 record in the CCAA and 14-9 overall. Humboldt State drops to 6-10 in the CCAA and 11-13 overall.
The three seniors honored tonight were Rachel Andrews, Emily Papale, and Alexandra Flores. Andrews currently leads the CCAA in hitting percentage (.386).
Courtney Seda had top numbers in assists (40), service aces (4) and digs (9). Ashleigh Phelps matched her season high of 24 digs and Papale matched her season high of 3 service aces.
Leading the Seawolf offense was Calan Seitz with 13 kills, Caiti Wiesner with 10, and Rachel Andrews with 9. The team had 6 total blocks, and Kelsey McIntire had 2 solo blocks.
The first set was the closest in the match, with 15 tied scores and five lead changes. The largest point gap in the set was four at 23-19. However, the Jacks came back to tie the set at 23 all off 4 Seawolf errors. In the end, Sonoma won the set with a McIntire and Papale double block.
In the second set there were four tied scores, but the Seawolves held the lead. Humboldt state called a time out at 9-5 after a 5-1 Sonoma run. From there Sonoma surged and extended their lead ahead of Humboldt comfortably for the rest of the set. At 19-16, two kills and a solo block by Wiesner along with a kill by Seda and a Jacks error put the Seawolves at game point. The win was sealed off of a Humboldt service error.
In the third set the Seawolves dominated; no lead changes and no tied scores were seen. The first time out was called at 16-12. Humboldt came out of their huddle aggressively and closed the gap to 17-16, again at 20-19. A 5-1 Sonoma run at the end of the set, highlighted by kills from Seitz and Wiesner and a double block by Andrews and Papale, won the match in favor of the Seawolves.
Sonoma State will finish their regular conference play on the road. They play Cal State San Bernardino on November 11 at 7pm, and then Cal Poly Pomona on November 12 at 7pm.
