ROHNERT PARK -- A scoreless game was broken open in the seventh inning by visiting Academy of Art, as their four run barrage held up to a late rally by Sonoma State in the Seawolves' 4-2 loss to the Urban Knights on Tuesday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.
The Academy of Art (3-4) led off the inning with four consecutive singles, as Erick Luna's grounder up the middle gave the Urban Knights the first run of the game. An error by
Rupert Watson on a ground ball to second base by Payton Milone allowed two more runs to come home, highlighting an inning full of bad luck for reliever
Haydon Turpin (0-1).
After a fielder's choice made it 4-0, Sonoma State got on the board in the ninth thanks to a
Matthew Richards RBI double and a
Ryan O'Malley sacrifice fly, but
Grant St. Martin struck out to end the game as the tying run, giving Roman Martinez his first save of the season for the Urban Knights. Cody Ball picked up the win in relief for the Academy of Art, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
Sonoma State (1-6) had opportunities in both the second and third innings to get the scoring started, but left five runners on between the two frames. The Seawolves left 11 total men on the base paths.
Matt Hammonds pitched well in his start for Sonoma, throwing three scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
Richards led the way for Sonoma at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles. O'Malley, St. Martin,
Cody Morris and
Trevor Abrams each added hits for the Seawolves, who have now lost four of their first five games at home in 2016.
UP NEXT: Sonoma State will host Concordia of Oregon on Friday afternoon to begin a four game series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
