Sonoma Prevails Over ARTU In Battle Of Undefeated Teams

SAN FRANCISCO -- With the 26th-ranked Sonoma State women's tennis team trailing 4-3 in the match to 23rd-ranked Academy of Art, Jordyn Kearney and Jensyn Warren rallied from first-set losses to force a tiebreaking third set and, after Kearney's opponent was forced to retire due to an injury with Kearney leading 5-2 in the third, knotting the match at 4-4, Warren fought off match-point on three occasions late in her tiebreaker before capturing a thrilling win to clinch the 5-4 victory for the Seawolves on Saturday in San Francisco.

Sonoma remained perfect on the season at 5-0 while the Urban Knights suffered their first loss of the year, falling to 3-1.

Kearney and Warren also teamed up at No. 1 doubles earlier in the match, dispatching Annika Schneider and Michelle Dandik, 8-2, and setting the tone for the match.  Hillary Fazekas and Karlee Budge put the Seawolves up 2-1 with an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, wins by Academy of Art at No. 3 and No. 5 gave the hosts a 3-2 lead before Fazekas cruised to an easy 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 to even the match again, but at 3-3.  The Urban Knights then get a win in straight sets at No. 4, setting up the dramatic finish by Kearney and Warren.

Sonoma State will take on Dominican next Saturday in San Rafael beginning at 11:00 am.
