LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Sonoma State softball team suffered a pair of losses on opening day of the 2016 season at the MSUB Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, falling 13-2 in six innings to California Baptist before coming up short after a late inning rally, 9-8, to host Montana State Billings on Friday afternoon.
In the two games combined,
Emma Ryan,
Jordann White and
Aubrie Tolliver recorded two hits each to lead the Seawolves (0-2) offensively.
Sonoma State will play two games on Saturday, taking on Western Washington at 11:30 am before playing No. 20 Augustana at 2:00 pm. The Seawolves will wrap up the Desert Stinger on Sunday when they go to battle with Colorado Mesa at 2:00 pm.
In the season opener against California Baptist, the Seawolves fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but an RBI single by Ryan in the bottom of the second evened the score at 1-1. However, the Lancers scored five runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth inning to take a 13-1 lead.Â
Leanna Georges brought home a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be all the Seawolves could muster, dropping the 13-2 decision in six innings. White and Tolliver had both of their hits in the game.Â
Amanda Llerena suffered the loss, allowing six hits and six runs (four earned), walking three and striking out three in 3.1 innings of work.Â
In the nightcap against Montana State Billings, Sonoma State got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Tolliver scored on a defensive miscue by the MSUB catcher on the catcher's attempt to throw Tolliver out at third base. The 1-0 lead didn't hold up long as the Yellowjackets plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the second to take a 9-1 lead.
The Seawolves chipped away at the eight-run disadvantage, starting in the fourth when Georges scored on a passed ball before
Mayleen Mazon came across the plate on an RBI single by
Sarah Langley. In the fifth, Mazon brought home two runs on a single up the middle to cut the MSUB lead to 9-5. Then, in their last at bat in the seventh, the Seawolves took advantage of several defensive errors to pull within one run at 9-8, and had two runners on base with just one out. However, the Yellowjackets induced two consecutive fly outs to end the game.
Mazon (0-1) was tagged with the loss after she allowed all nine runs (seven earned) in her 1.1 innings of work. Llerena came on in relief in the bottom of the second and allowed no runs and just two hits the rest of the way.
