Seawolves Go 2-0 On Saturday At MSUB Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The 19th-ranked Sonoma State softball team knocked off No. 20 Augustana 2-1 in nine innings before defeating Western Washington 3-1 for its first wins of the 2016 season on Saturday at the MSUB Desert Stinger at Majestic Park in Las Vegas, Nev.  The Seawolves improve to 2-2 this season and will wrap up play at the Desert Stinger on Sunday against Colorado Mesa at 2:00 pm.

#19 Sonoma State 2, #20 Augustana 1 (9 innings)

In what started out as a pitcher's duel between Augustana's Karlee Koopman and Sonoma State's Amanda Llerena, Augustana was able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Koopman suffered the loss for the Vikings despite pitching 8.1 strong innings striking out six batters.

Sarah Kennedy drove in Augustana's only run of the game with an RBI double in the third that drove in Abby Chandler who walked with one out to start the rally for the Vikings.

The Vikings had the offense going and had plenty of chances to score finishing with seven hits but 11 runners were left on base in the game, including three in the top of the seventh.

Sonoma State tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth after Alex Flores led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Aubrie Tolliver after being moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Augustana sacrificed a runner to third in each of the extra-innings after starting the inning with a runner on second but the Vikings were unable to push a run across. Sonoma State scored the game-winning run on an RBI single by Leanna Georges to take the game 2-1 by the international tiebreak rule in the bottom of the ninth.

#19 Sonoma State 3, Western Washington 1

Western Washington opened up the scoring in the third inning via a long sacrifice fly to center field by Alexie Levin, which plated Arianna Barrio for the Vikings only run of the game. The Vikings had a few other chances to score, including bases loaded in the sixth inning, but couldn't quite manage to get a runner across the plate.

Sonoma State tied the game in the fifth inning when Lindsey Calcany Blair hit a solo home run to left field. The Seawolves grabbed the lead scoring a pair of runs in the sixth, including the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Jordann White.
