ROHNERT PARK -- Carlie Daniel went 4 for 5 with a double, two walks and three RBI and
Amanda Llerena earned a complete-game shutout win in the opener as the Sonoma State softball team swept visiting Cal State Monterey Bay, 6-0 and 4-2, in Tuesday's CCAA doubleheader at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves have won their last four games, and six of their last seven, to improve to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in CCAA action. The Otters continued to struggle this season, falling to 9-12 (4-10 CCAA).
Sonoma State will next head to San Francisco State on Friday and Saturday for a four-game series in the city.
GAME 1: Sonoma State 6, Cal State Monterey Bay 0The Seawolves didn't take long to put a run across the plate in the opener, loading the bases on CSUMB starter Bianca Noriega with just one out. Noriega walked Daniel to bring home
Leanna Georges for the 1-0 lead, but Noriega worked herself out of the jam, getting a line out and a ground out to end the threat.
In their next at bat, the Seawolves loaded the bases again, this time with two outs after a single and two hit by pitches. The Otters brought in Rosalia Keirns to replace Noriega, and Keirns proceeded to walk
Jena Kaser to bring home a run in
Alison Strycula, then Daniel recorded an RBI infield single to score Georges again for the 3-0 advantage.
Sonoma added three more runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Kaser and
Lindsey Calcany Blair and a bases loaded walk to
Sarah Langley for the 6-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Llerena (6-3) was dominating in the circle, allowing just six hits while striking out five Otters en route to her sixth win of the year, and her second shutout.
GAME 2: Sonoma State 4, Cal State Monterey Bay 2Sonoma began game two right where they left off in game one, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by
Jordann White, the first home run of her career. Another run came home in the third on an RBI double by Daniel to put SSU up 3-0.
Cal State Monterey Bay started making a move, scoring a run in the fourth off of
Mayleen Mazon and another in the fifth off of
Brielle Vidmar, but that would be all the two Seawolf pitchers would allow as Mazon (1-3) earned her first win of the year in the circle and Vidmar recorded her first career save. Mazon went the first four innings and gave up the one run on three hits and two walks, then Vidmar allowed the other run on three hits and one walk.
The Seawolves padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth when
Olivia Lucchese came home on a wild pitch, accounting for the 4-2 final score.
Kaser and Daniel each had two hits in the nightcap, and White had the two-run bomb in the first to lead the Seawolves offensively.
