LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Sarah Langley crushed the first two home runs of her collegiate career on Thursday, and
Emma Ryan also belted her first career home run in game two, but the Sonoma State softball team was forced to split a doubleheader with 23rd-ranked UC San Diego at Triton Softball Field in La Jolla.
The Seawolves (11-7, 8-4 CCAA) captured a 3-1 win in game one before the Tritons (15-7, 9-5 CCAA) rallied for a 3-2 walkoff victory in eight innings in the nightcap.
Sonoma State and UC San Diego will wrap up the series with another doubleheader on Friday beginning at 11:00 am.
GAME 1: Sonoma State 3, #23 UC San Diego 1Langley broke the scoreless tie in the series opener in the third inning with her solo shot to left center. It remained 1-0 in favor of SSU until the top of the sixth when
Leanna Georges tripled to leadoff the frame before scampering home on a wild pitch for the 2-0 lead.
The Tritons got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when they had runners on first and second with one out. An errant throw by Langley in an attempt to pick off the runner on first base sailed down the right field line, allowing UCSD to cut the SSU lead in half at 2-1.
In the top of the seventh, Sonoma cushioned its lead when
Alison Strycula roped an RBI single to left field allowing
Aubrie Tolliver to score for the 3-1 advantage.
Amanda Llerena capped her complete-game winning effort with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh to secure her seventh win of the season. She did so by allowing just the one unearned run on three hits and one walk, striking out two. In addition to the hits by Langley, Strycula and Georges,
Carlie Daniel added two hits and
Jordann White accounted for the other.

The Tritons rallied for a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to knot the ballgame at 2-2.
It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth that the go-ahead run would score, and it came on a two-out double by Kendall Baker to score Maddy Lewis for the walkoff 3-2 win.
Llerena (7-4) was tagged with the loss after relieving starter
Brielle Vidmar to start the sixth inning. Vidmar went the first five innings and gave up two runs on five hits and two walks before Llerena gave up the game-winning run and two hits, adding three strikeouts in her two and two-thirds innings of work.
The Seawolves outhit the Tritons, 9-7, as Georges,
Jena Kaser, Langley and Ryan all had two hits apiece, the other hit coming off the bat of
Lindsey Calcany Blair.
